Smart heating controls: a simple upgrade for a smarter, greener home

Smart thermostats and modulating controls can cut around £110 a year off UK heating bills and are now required for many new boilers.

When bills are rising and sustainability is on everyone's mind, smart heating controls are the easiest way for UK homeowners to manage comfort without waste. But what are they, how do they work and why is now the best time to upgrade?

What are smart heating controls?

Smart heating controls connect your boiler and radiators to a digital 'brain' - thermostats, apps, sensors and timers that learn and respond to your family's patterns. With Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, you can adjust heating schedules from your phone or voice assistant, or rely on geofencing so you're never heating an empty home.

There are two main types:

  • Learning thermostats (e.g. Nest, Tado): adapt to your lifestyle and can reduce energy usage by up to 10-12% a year.
  • Modulating controls (e.g. Honeywell Evohome): adjust not just 'on/off' but how hot water is sent through your system, for maximum efficiency even in older boilers.

The tangible benefits

  • Save money: the Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical UK home can cut up to £110 a year in heating bills.
  • Personalised comfort: different rooms, different settings - no more freezing bedrooms or overheating lounges.
  • Remote access: forgot to turn off the heat? Correct it from anywhere.
  • Automatic adaptation: smart controls factor in weather, occupancy and even how fast your home heats up.

Regulations - it's not just a trend

The UK's Boiler Plus standard (Part L, since 2022) makes smart or programmable controls mandatory for many new boiler installations. Fail to comply and you risk voiding warranties or falling foul of building control. Upgrading now makes your property future-proof and more attractive for resale.

Typical issues - and how we solve them

Some homeowners worry that smart systems are confusing. We simplify the process:

  • We select controls that suit you - no expensive add-ons you won't use.
  • Every install is tailored, with in-person guidance before we leave.
  • Help is on hand for troubleshooting, app set-up or system tweaks.

Upgrading as part of a system overhaul

Integrating smart controls during a boiler or radiator upgrade maximises efficiency. Systems can be 'zoned' for upstairs/downstairs or day/night routines - saving energy and improving comfort. Done all at once, it's less disruption, maximised compliance and a fully optimised result.
