What is a water softener?
A water softener is a compact unit fitted to your incoming mains supply. It removes the calcium and magnesium minerals that make water hard, before they reach your taps and appliances.

How does it work?
Inside the softener, water passes through a resin bed that swaps hardness minerals for a tiny amount of sodium. The unit cleans itself automatically on a timer, using a small amount of salt.

Common questions
Do I really need a water softener in this area?
Most of Sunninghill and the surrounding area has hard to very hard water. If your kettle scales up quickly, your shower head clogs or your boiler has needed descaling, a softener will pay for itself over time.
How much does a water softener cost to run?
Modern softeners are efficient - typically £5-£10 a month in salt. That is usually offset by lower energy bills (scale-free boilers run more efficiently) and appliances that last longer.
Can I still drink the water?
Yes. We keep one cold tap - usually the kitchen tap - on unsoftened water for drinking and cooking, which is the standard recommendation. Every other tap in the house runs soft.
Where does a softener get installed?
Wherever the mains enters your home - commonly under the kitchen sink, in a utility room, garage or loft. We will survey and recommend the neatest option, with proper isolation, drain and overflow.
How long does installation take?
Most installations are completed in half a day. We will talk you through how it works and how to top up the salt before we leave.

Yes - softened water dramatically reduces scale on heat exchangers, cylinder coils and combi hot water circuits. That means better efficiency, quieter operation and fewer breakdowns.
